The Samsung GALAXY S III has certainly stood the test of time. Despite having first been released nearly a year ago (on the 31st of May 2012), the S III is still widely praised and remains a popular smartphone choice for users from all walks of life. However, less than a year later we see the release of the Samsung GALAXY S4, the latest in Samsung’s incredibly popular GALAXY range.

Whenever a new version of a phone is released, the question of exactly how much better than its predecessor it is naturally arises. Here at Vodafone, we’re going to answer that question for you, with an easy-to-read table and handy explanatory breakdowns to ensure that even the most technophobic smartphone user should know exactly what’s on offer. First thing’s first, the table:

Intrigued? You should be. Let’s take a closer look…

Dimensions and weight

Despite the GALAXY S III being pretty svelte itself, the S4 is somehow even smaller despite having a larger, higher quality screen. It’s also lighter, further proving just how impressive a piece of engineering Samsung’s latest smartphone is. That said, if you do decide to get a Samsung GALAXY S III, chances are you won’t even notice that tiny amount of extra weight.

Main screen

The GALAXY S III’s screen certainly isn’t to be sniffed at, with its impressive 4.8″ HD Super AMOLED display having proved itself to be more than capable of keeping even the most discerning eye happy. However, the Samsung GALAXY S4 blows this out of the water with a larger 5″ full HD Super AMOLED display and greater pixel density, creating even crisper and more breath-taking visuals all round. The S4 also features eye tracking technology, meaning it pause videos if you look away (Smart Pause) or analyse your eyes and wrist movements in order to allow you to scroll through emails and other content (Smart Scroll).

Camera

While the difference between the S III and S4’s front camera is almost negligible, there is a big difference in specifications between the primary cameras of the two models. While the Samsung GALAXY S III has an undeniably respectable 8 megapixel camera, the GALAXY S4 boasts an incredible 13 megapixel camera that allows you to take full HD video recordings and photos with zero shutter lag. The S4 also includes the Dual Camera feature, which allows you take simultaneous photos and videos using the front and rear cameras and then blend them together.

Processor and RAM

As can easily be seen from the table, the Samsung GALAXY S4 is, as you might expect, the clear winner here, with double the RAM of its predecessor.

Operating system

The Samsung GALAXY S4 comes loaded with Android 4.2.1, giving it a more advanced operating system than the S III out of the box. This version of the Jelly Bean OS includes handy new features such as:

  • Smart Pause – Automatically pauses what you’re watching if you stop looking at it
  • Group Play – Means you can enjoy your favourite music, photos and games with those around you without a mobile internet or Wi-Fi signal
  • Air Gesture – Allows you to get your phone to perform a wide variety of functions with a simple wave of your hand

However, Android 4.0 is still a decent operating system, making the Samsung GALAXY S III a solid choice if you’re looking to budget.

Battery

Reviewers have repeatedly praised the Samsung GALAXY S III’s battery life, lauding it as being excellent for the phone’s age and specs. The Samsung GALAXY S4, however, ups the ante even further. Its increased battery life means that it is not only more than capable of keeping its newer and more powerful hardware running smoothly but also that Samsung’s latest smartphone is able to keep running for longer.

So which GALAXY should you go for?

With the most up to date hardware and software as well as some truly dazzling specs, the Samsung GALAXY S4 is certainly a tempting choice. However, if you want your new handset as soon as possible or are perhaps looking to budget a little, you may want to try the Samsung GALAXY S III, which is still an impressive smartphone in its own right.

If you’re still unsure, why not register your details here we’ll keep you posted with all the Samsung GALAXY S4 updates.
